Bertazzoni Rangetop Burner Dies the Moment You Let Go of the Knob

A burner that lights while you hold the knob but goes out when you release it points to a safety part doing its job, or struggling to.

You press the knob, the burner clicks and lights, and then the flame vanishes as soon as you let go. It is frustrating, but it tells you something useful about how the rangetop works.

What is going on

Gas burners have a flame safety device. Its job is to keep gas flowing only while it senses a flame. When you press the knob, you override it for a few seconds. Releasing the knob lets the safety part take over, and if it does not sense heat, it shuts the gas off.

Likely reasons

  • The sensing tip is dirty with grease or a boil-over film
  • The burner cap is out of position, so the flame never reaches the sensor
  • Moisture or residue is cooling the sensor
  • The safety part has worn out and no longer holds

Try this first

  1. Cool the rangetop and remove the grate and cap.
  2. Gently wipe the small sensing tip beside the igniter with a lightly dampened cloth.
  3. Dry it well and replace the cap, making sure it sits flat.
  4. Press and hold the knob for the full time the manual suggests, then release slowly.

What not to do

Never tape down a knob, hold a button with a tool, or find a way to bypass the safety part. That safety is what stops gas from leaking into your kitchen when a flame blows out. Houston storms can also snuff a flame near an open window, so the device matters.

If cleaning does not help, stop using that burner. A technician can test the sensor and valve and replace only what has worn out.
