What CAL (blinking) means

On Bertazzoni 30-inch combi-steam ovens such as the MAST30CSEX, PROF30CSEX, MASCS30X and PROCS30X, a blinking CAL means descaling was ignored for too long. First the Descale light comes on, then flashes, and finally the oven is blocked and CAL blinks. Cooking will not resume until the descaling procedure has been run. Mineral scale from hard water is the usual reason.

Common causes of CAL (blinking)

  • Descale reminders that were ignored for several cycles
  • Hard water that builds scale in the steam generator faster than usual
  • Descaling started but interrupted before it finished
  • A tank filled with untreated tap water over a long time
✓ One safe check you can try

1. Empty the water tank and rinse it. 2. Prepare the descaling solution the oven's instructions call for. 3. Pour it into the tank and start the descaling program from the menu. 4. Let the full cycle finish, then rinse with fresh water. 5. If CAL still blinks afterward, call us.

! Why to stop there
  • Using a cleaner other than the descaler the oven calls for can leave residue in the steam parts.
  • Heavy scale may need professional descaling, as a rushed attempt can clog the pump.
  • Interrupting the cycle leaves scale partially loosened and the oven still blocked.
Opening a panel yourself does not automatically cancel a manufacturer warranty, but it can cause accidental damage, and some manufacturers set their own service conditions. Check your warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.

CAL (blinking)CAL (blinking) questions
Why is the oven blocked?

The oven locks cooking to protect the steam system. Scale left in the generator reduces steam output and can overheat parts. Running the descaling program lifts the block.

How can I avoid CAL in the future?

Descale as soon as the Descale light turns on, and consider filtered water for the tank. Hard water is the main driver of scale, so the reminder can come sooner than you expect.

The descaling cycle ended and CAL still blinks. What now?

Run the rinse again with fresh water and restart the oven. If CAL stays, scale may still be blocking the steam path, and a technician can descale it and check the pump. We cover that work with a 30-day warranty.
