A dual fuel range mixes gas burners with an electric oven. After a Houston storm knocks out power, here is what still works and what to avoid.
Hurricane season and summer thunderstorms can leave Houston neighborhoods dark for hours or days. If you own a Bertazzoni dual fuel range, you have gas burners on top and an electric oven below, and the two react to an outage very differently.
The gas burners need electricity only for their spark igniters. During an outage you can usually light a burner with a long match or lighter held at the burner ports while pressing and turning the knob. Hold the match close, light it first, and only then turn the knob so gas never builds up unlit.
The electric oven will not heat at all without power, and the display, clock and any electronic timers go dark too. Do not try to use the gas burners to heat the room or the oven cavity. That is a carbon monoxide risk, and the range was never built for it.
Power surges as the grid comes back can damage electronic parts. If the display stays blank, shows scrambled characters, or the oven refuses to heat, leave it off and let us look.
