Bertazzoni French-Door Refrigerator Code E5: Freezer Frost or Defrost Sensor

What E5 means

E5 names a frost-related freezer sensor on three Bertazzoni French-door platforms. On the REF36FDFZXNT it is the freezer frost sensor, shown in locked mode with an alarm chime. On the REF36FDFIXNV and REF36FDFIXNB it is the defrost sensor of the freezer room, and on the RFD36FZNX and RFD36FZNW the frosting sensor for freezing. In each case the appliance can still cool.

Common causes of E5

A freezer frost or defrost sensor with an open or shorted reading
A broken lead or loose plug at the freezer coil
Thick frost or ice covering the sensor
A control board input that cannot read the sensor

1. Press a button to stop the chime if the REF36FDFZXNT is beeping. 2. Look at the freezer back wall for heavy frost. 3. Make sure the freezer drawer or door closes completely. 4. If ice is thick, empty the freezer, unplug it and allow a full thaw, then restart. 5. If E5 returns afterward, call us.

! Why to stop there

The freezer coil and its sensor are behind the back panel, and the tubing is easy to puncture.
Other French-door generations give E5 a different meaning, so a chart for a different model misleads.
A thaw only clears the frost itself; it does not repair the sensor or the defrost circuit.

Why does E5 have three different names?

Each platform words it differently, but all three describe the sensor that tracks frost or defrost in the freezer. That reading decides when the defrost heater runs.

Does a freezer thaw fix E5?

Sometimes, when frost buried the sensor. If E5 returns after a full thaw, the sensor or the defrost circuit needs a technician. Moving food to a spare freezer during the thaw protects it.

Can the code harm the food?

Not at once. The appliance can still cool and freeze. Over time, though, wrong defrost timing leads to frost build-up, so we suggest scheduling a visit within the week.
